noun Bot. Family of dicotyledonous plants, shrubs and herbs, with gnarled stems and branches, opposite leaves, gamopetalous flowers in axillary or terminal inflorescences, and capsular fruits, such as bear's breeches (Acanthus mollis).

Etymology

From modern Latin Acanthaceae; from Acanthus, name of a plant genus; from Greek akanthos, «thorn», because of the soft thorns present on these plants; and the Latin suffix -aceae, «-aceous».
