Aceraceae

noun Bot. Family of dicotyledonous plants, comprising 200 species in two genera, Acer and Dipteronia (the latter with only two species). Its species are trees or shrubs with opposite leaves, actinomorphic flowers (usually unisexual), and double samara fruit. Representative species: Acer sp. «maple».

Type genus: Acer L.

Etymology

From modern Latin Aceraceae; from Acer, aceris, «maple», and the Latin suffix -aceae, «-aceous».
