Adiantaceae

noun Bot. Family of Pteridophytes within the order Filicales. They are characterized by their sporangia located in rows along the veins of the leaves or at the ends of them. They lack an indusium, although sometimes the sporangia can be protected by a curl of the leaf margin (false indusium).

Type genus: Adiantum.

  • Venus-hair fern. Venus-hair fern (Adiantum capillus-veneris) is an ornamental plant.

This family consists of some 850 species grouped in 60 genera, which in turn are grouped into 2 subfamilies, Adiantoideae (Adiantum) and Vittarioideae (Vittaria ).

Etymology

From modern Latin Adiantaceae; from Adiantum, name of a plant genus; and the Latin suffix -aceae, «-aceous».
