Agavaceae

noun Bot. Family of monocotyledonous plants within the order Liliales. It comprises 18 genera and some 600 species. Its members have narrow leaves with numerous thornes along the margin, the flowers are arranged in racemes, and the fruit is a capsule or berry. Agave (Agave americana) is the most representative species.

Type genus: Agave.

Etymology

From modern Latin Agavaceae; from Agave, name of a plant genus; and the Latin suffix -aceae, «-aceous».
