Araceae

noun Bot. Family of monocotyledonous plants, herbaceous or woody, with alternate cordate (heart-shaped) or sagitate (arrowhead-shaped) leaves surrounding a scape with flowers in a spadix, covered by a spathe, such as the arum (Arum spp.), anthurium (Anthurium spp.), and peace lily (Spathiphyllum spp.).

Etymology

From modern Latin Araceae; from Arum, name of a plant genus; from Greek aron, common name for the plants within this genus and for other similar plants; and the Latin suffix -aceae, «-aceous».
