The bulb of garlic is used primarily as a condiment, but it also has medicinal properties.

In folk medicine, garlic is considered:
· antibacterial
· antispasmodic
· anthelmintic
· antiseptic
· carminative
· cholagogue
· diaphoretic
· digestive
· diuretic
· expectorant
· febrifuge
· insect repellent
In folk medicine, it is considered helpful against:
· asthma
· cold
· cough
· sores
· hypertension
· poor circulation
· tumors
· leprosy
More recently, the following properties have been reported:
· anthelmintic (raw extract)
· strong antimicrobial
· antitumoral (allicin)
· blood sugar reducer
· blood cholesterol modifier
· arteriosclerosis modifier
Garlic oil has, among others, the following chemical compounds:
· allicin
· alliin
· alliinase
· s-methyl-L-cysteine sulfoxide
· s-propyl-L-cysteine sulfoxide
Contact with garlic can cause dermatitis. Besides, some fatal cases in children due to the use of garlic preparations have been reported.
